Los Angeles, CA – In a move that surprised many, Senator Bernie Sanders made a high-profile appearance at Coachella music festival on Saturday night, delivering a passionate speech aimed at galvanizing young voters against President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Sanders, alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, took to the stage to introduce singer Clairo, praising her advocacy for reproductive rights and her stance against the war in Gaza. But the highlight of the evening was Sanders’ own address to the crowd – estimated at around 36,000 – where he urged a “your generation” to actively resist what he called a “lawless, authoritarian agenda.”
“The future of what happens to America is dependent upon your generation,” Sanders declared, emphasizing the need for action on issues like economic justice, social justice, and racial justice. He specifically warned about the threats Trump and the GOP pose to tackling climate change, improving abortion rights, worker’s rights, and access to equitable healthcare.
The crowd responded with boos each time Sanders mentioned Trump, demonstrating a clear divide.
Sanders’ appearance comes after a recent surge in support for Trump among young voters and follows Senator Cory Booker’s marathon speech to Congress. It’s a strategic move by Sanders to connect with a demographic crucial for the Democrats. Representative Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.), the youngest member of Congress, introduced Sanders.
“We have an economy today that is working very well for the billionaire class, but not for working families,” Sanders stated. “We need you to help us to create an economy that works well for everybody, not just the one percent.”
Sanders’ efforts align with the strategy advocated by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who urged Democrats to “just tell the truth about what’s going on.”
The campaign is currently on the road with Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, and the pair recently held a rally in Los Angeles, drawing a crowd of approximately 36,000.
