Easter Weekend: Flood Risks in the Ozarks

As many families gear up for their first big outdoor getaways of the season, a serious weather threat is brewing across the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma – and it’s timed perfectly to coincide with Easter weekend. Torrential rain, the potential for severe thunderstorms, and the risk of flash flooding are all on the table, demanding caution and preparedness.

A Familiar Threat Returns

Just two weeks after devastating floods impacted the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, a new atmospheric river is poised to unleash a similar deluge across the region. This river, fueled by moisture originating from the western Gulf, is set to deliver a significant amount of rain – potentially 1-4 inches across a wide area, with localized areas seeing up to 8 inches in a few days.

The Ozarks: A Landscape Vulnerable to Flash Flooding

The key concern lies within the Ozark Mountains themselves. The region’s steep, hilly terrain dramatically increases the risk of flash flooding. Rapid runoff from heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm small streams and urban areas, creating dangerous conditions. Campers and travelers should exercise extreme caution, particularly near streams and low-lying areas. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways – even shallow water can cause significant damage and pose a serious safety risk.

River Levels Rise – A Multi-Front Flood Threat

This isn’t just a localized issue. The rain will impact several major rivers:

  • Mississippi River: The surge of water from the earlier April floods continues to move downstream, with crests already occurring or predicted this weekend along the shores of the Mississippi River bordering Tennessee, southern Missouri, western Kentucky, northern Arkansas and northern Mississippi. This could lead to flash urban flooding and significant rises on the rivers in the immediate vicinity.
  • Missouri & Arkansas Rivers: Tributaries of the Missouri and Arkansas rivers are expected to rise significantly, potentially leading to flooding. The Meramec River, which experienced major flooding in early April, is of particular concern.
  • Mississippi River (Southern Reach): It may take until nearly the end of the month for the Mississippi River to crest at moderate to major flood stage.

Important Safety Reminders:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and warnings closely.
  • Avoid Low-Lying Areas: Steer clear of streams, rivers, and low-lying areas.
  • Don’t Drive Through Floodwater: This is paramount.
  • Be Prepared: Pack essential supplies if you’re traveling in affected areas.
